What To Expect During the Dental Implant Procedure

Dental implants replace missing teeth with a small post that sits in your jawbone; it acts like a tooth root, and a custom crown attaches on top. If you have lost a tooth, you can learn what the process looks like from start to finish. Here is each step of the procedure so you know what happens at every stage:

Three Visits

Many dental implants are placed over three separate visits. The first visit places the post, the second captures impressions, and the third fits your final crown. Your dentist will space these visits out to allow your jaw time to heal. This is what each visit covers:

  • Visit one: Placement of the implant post
  • Visit two: Custom impressions of your mouth
  • Visit three: Placement of the final zirconia crown

Healing time falls between each appointment, so the full timeline typically spans several months. For recovery, the gaps give your bone a chance to bond with the post. You will get a clear schedule at your first appointment.

Initial Implant

The first visit focuses on placing the implant into your jaw. Your dentist numbs the area, and you stay awake during the short procedure. To do this, the post goes into the bone where your tooth root used to sit.

After placement, the bone begins to grow around the post in a process called osseointegration. This step takes time, and your dentist monitors it at follow-up checks. Most patients return home the same day with simple aftercare instructions to follow.

Healing time between visits lets your jaw bond with the implant. The timeline spans a few months, but each visit is straightforward and planned in advance. To help you understand how to look after your new tooth, your dentist guides you through aftercare.

Custom Impressions

Once the post has fused with your bone, you return for impressions. Your dentist takes a detailed mold of your mouth, and a lab uses it to build your crown. This step shapes a tooth that matches the size and color of your natural teeth.

Accurate impressions matter because the crown must fit your bite. Your dentist checks the surrounding teeth, and the lab works from those exact measurements. You may wear a temporary cover while the lab completes your crown.

Final Crown

The last visit places your permanent zirconia crown. Zirconia is a strong, tooth-colored ceramic that holds up to daily chewing. Your dentist attaches the crown to the implant post and checks the fit.

During this appointment, your dentist adjusts the crown so it sits level with your other teeth. You bite down, and small tweaks bring everything into line. The crown is secured once the fit feels right.

After placement, you care for the crown as you would a natural tooth. A few habits keep it in good shape:

  • Brush twice a day
  • Floss around the implant
  • Visit your dentist for regular checkups

These steps support the gum and bone around your new tooth. Your dentist will review the routine with you before you leave.

Schedule Dental Implants Today

Dental implants follow a clear three-visit path, and each step builds on the one before. The post goes in first, impressions come next, and a zirconia crown finishes the work. If you are missing a tooth and want to learn more, book a consultation. A dental team will review your needs and walk you through the steps.
