How Do I Know if I Need Gallbladder Surgery?

The gallbladder is a small, pear-shaped organ, and it is located beneath the liver on the right side of the abdomen. Its primary job is to store bile, a fluid the liver produces to help digest fats. When you eat, the gallbladder releases bile into the small intestine through a series of ducts. If a problem disrupts this process, a doctor may evaluate whether gallbladder surgery is a suitable next step. Here’s more information about gallbladder issues and how to address them:

Recognizing Gallbladder Conditions

Gallstones are a frequently encountered gallbladder concern, forming when cholesterol or bilirubin hardens into deposits. These deposits range from a grain of sand to a golf ball, and some people have them without ever noticing. Symptoms arise when a stone blocks a duct and disrupts the normal flow of bile. Cholecystitis, or inflammation of the gallbladder, develops when a gallstone blocks the cystic duct. This duct drains the organ. Doctors also evaluate related conditions such as common bile duct stones, gallbladder polyps, and biliary dyskinesia, which refers to impaired gallbladder emptying. Because each condition follows a distinct path, your doctor identifies the specific diagnosis before recommending any course of action.

Identifying Signs for Evaluation

Physicians evaluate gallbladder-related signs by reviewing the type, frequency, and duration of your symptoms. Some people notice discomfort after eating a large or high-fat meal, while others experience symptoms at night. The following signs are among those a physician may ask about during an evaluation:

  • Pain in the upper right or upper middle abdomen
  • Pain that radiates to the right shoulder or back
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Fever or chills
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes
  • Dark urine or light-colored stools

Repeated pain episodes may lead a doctor to discuss gallbladder surgery, particularly when imaging confirms the presence of gallstones. Severe abdominal pain, a high fever, or yellowing of the skin warrant prompt medical attention, as these signs require timely assessment. Your physician uses all of this information together to determine the appropriate next step.

Reviewing Diagnostic Methods

Diagnosis typically begins with a physical exam and a thorough review of your health history. Your doctor checks for abdominal tenderness; they may also order blood tests to assess liver function, detect signs of infection, and measure pancreatic enzyme levels. These results help your physician build a clearer picture of what is happening internally.

Imaging plays a fundamental role in confirming a gallbladder condition. An abdominal ultrasound may be the first tool used, since it identifies gallstones and wall thickening without radiation exposure. If results remain unclear, a HIDA scan, which tracks bile movement through the gallbladder and ducts, sometimes follows. A CT scan or magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) offers additional detail when a more precise view of the bile ducts is needed.

Learn More About Gallbladder Surgery

When test results indicate a gallbladder condition, your doctor may refer you to a general surgeon for further evaluation. Conditions such as gallstones and cholecystitis disrupt the organ’s fundamental role in digestion. Doctors rely on symptoms, blood work, and imaging to determine whether surgery is appropriate; a consultation provides a detailed overview of the procedure and alternatives. One common surgical option is cholecystectomy, which involves removing the gallbladder. If you notice recurring abdominal pain or other related symptoms, schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider to start a thorough evaluation.
