Preventive Measures and Treatments for Retinal Detachment

Retinal detachment occurs when the retina separates from the tissue that supports it, threatening vision and requiring urgent medical attention. Although not all cases are preventable, understanding risk factors and recognizing warning signs can support timely care. Here is a closer look at preventive measures and treatments for retinal detachment:

Recognizing Urgent Warning Signs

Retinal detachment often causes no pain, so vision changes are the main warning sign. These symptoms sometimes appear suddenly. If you notice any of the following signs, contact an eye doctor or visit an emergency department the same day:

  • Sudden flashes of light: Brief flickers or streaks appear, often at the edge of your vision.
  • New or increased floaters: Specks, threads, or cobweb shapes drift across your sight in larger numbers than usual.
  • Darkened side vision: A gray or dark area forms at the outer edge of your field of view.
  • A shadow or curtain: A dark shape moves across part of your vision and stays in place.
  • Blurred or distorted vision: Straight lines look wavy, or fine details become harder to see.

Reducing Risk Where Possible

Not every retinal detachment is preventable, but you can take steps to protect your eyes. Schedule a dilated eye exam at the intervals your eye doctor recommends, especially if you have severe nearsightedness or a history of eye surgery. During this exam, the doctor widens your pupils with drops to get a clear view of the retina. If the doctor finds a tear or thin area, they sometimes treat it with a laser or freezing procedure before a detachment develops.

People with diabetes face a specific risk. High blood sugar damages retinal blood vessels over time, and scar tissue can form on the surface. When this tissue tightens, it pulls on the retina, which leads to a type called tractional retinal detachment. Work with your health care team to manage blood sugar and blood pressure.

Exploring Treatment Options

Your eye specialist chooses a treatment based on the detachment’s type, size, and location. Before any procedure, the doctor performs a dilated exam and sometimes uses an ultrasound scan for a clearer view. Each option follows a different process, and recovery steps vary.

Pneumatic Retinopexy

During pneumatic retinopexy, the doctor injects a small gas bubble into the eye. The bubble presses the detached retina back against the back of the eye. After the retina moves into place, the doctor seals the tear with a laser or freezing probe, and you hold a specific head position for several days.

Scleral Buckling

Scleral buckling involves a thin silicone band placed on the outside of the eye. The surgeon usually performs this procedure in an operating room; the band pushes the eye wall inward toward the retina, which helps the tissue reattach. The band stays in place permanently in some cases, and it remains hidden beneath the surface of the eye.

Vitrectomy

In a vitrectomy, the surgeon removes the vitreous, the clear gel that fills the inside of the eye. This step gives the surgeon direct access to the retina and any scar tissue. Once the retina flattens, the surgeon fills the eye with a gas bubble or silicone oil to hold it in place, and the body gradually replaces the gas with natural fluid.

Learn More About Retinal Detachment

Retinal detachment requires prompt attention, and knowing the warning signs can help you act quickly. Regular eye exams, diabetes management, and protective eyewear are key to reducing risk. When treatment becomes necessary, your specialist explains which option fits your situation.
