Understanding the Role of an OB/GYN in Maternal Health

An obstetrician-gynecologist (OB/GYN) is a physician trained in pregnancy, childbirth, and reproductive health, and each stage involves different tests and types of support. Obstetrics covers pregnancy and birth, and gynecology covers the reproductive system outside of pregnancy. When you become pregnant, your OB/GYN guides your care from the first visit through recovery. Here is more information on the role of these professionals:

Providing Prenatal Care

Prenatal care starts early in pregnancy, and visits usually follow a set schedule. Many patients see their OB/GYN monthly during the first months, until visits become more frequent. During each visit, your provider tracks your health and your baby’s growth. Typical prenatal services include the following:

  • Blood pressure and weight checks
  • Blood and urine tests
  • Ultrasounds to check fetal development
  • Screening for gestational diabetes and genetic conditions
  • Guidance on nutrition, exercise, and prenatal vitamins

If you have questions between visits, write them down and bring the list to your next appointment. Your OB/GYN also reviews your medications and medical history. Some medicines are safe during pregnancy, but others may need adjustment. Sharing complete information helps your provider make informed recommendations.

Managing High-risk Pregnancies

Some pregnancies carry a higher chance of complications. A pregnancy may count as high-risk when the mother has diabetes, high blood pressure, or a clotting disorder. Age plays a role, and so does carrying twins or triplets. Your OB/GYN looks for these factors during your first visits.

High-risk care typically involves more appointments, and it may include extra testing. When needed, your provider can order frequent ultrasounds or fetal heart rate monitoring. These tests help your OB/GYN spot changes that may need treatment. Some patients also track their blood pressure or blood sugar at home.

Your OB/GYN may refer you to a maternal-fetal medicine specialist if your condition needs closer oversight. The specialist focuses on complex cases, and your OB/GYN often stays involved in your care. This team approach keeps communication clear between providers. Ask your care team which provider will manage your delivery.

Performing Delivery

Your OB/GYN manages labor and delivery in a hospital or birth center. Many babies arrive through vaginal birth, but some births require a cesarean section. A cesarean becomes an option when labor stalls or the baby shows signs of distress. Your provider explains the reasons before recommending surgery. As your due date approaches, talk with your OB/GYN about pain relief options.

Supporting Postpartum Care

OB/GYN care continues after delivery, and recovery may take several weeks or longer. Providers typically schedule a checkup within weeks, though some patients need an earlier visit. A full follow-up visit usually takes place a few months after birth. Call right away for heavy bleeding, fever, or severe headaches. Postpartum visits often cover these topics:

  • Healing after vaginal birth or cesarean
  • Breastfeeding or feeding concerns
  • Taking birth control and family planning
  • Screening for postpartum depression and anxiety
  • Managing ongoing conditions like high blood pressure

Schedule an OB/GYN Appointment

Early visits give your OB/GYN baseline health information, so schedule one soon after a positive pregnancy test. Bring a list of your medications and questions. If you are planning a pregnancy, a preconception visit lets you review your health ahead of time. Contact a women’s clinic office to book your first appointment.
