Recognizing the Signs and Symptoms of Ankle Sprains

The ankle is a frequently injured joint. Ankle sprains may occur during athletic activities, but they also happen during everyday tasks. Understanding how ankle sprains develop, as well as how to recognize them, can help individuals make informed decisions about their care.

What Are Ankle Sprains?

An ankle sprain is an injury to one or more ligaments in the ankle. When the foot twists beyond its normal range of motion, these ligaments can stretch or tear. Most ankle sprains affect the ligaments on the outer side of the ankle, and they occur when the foot rolls inward.

Healthcare providers can classify ankle sprains by severity. A mild sprain generally involves stretching or minor tearing of the ligament fibers. A moderate sprain involves a partial tear, and a severe sprain involves a complete tear. There are several factors that may increase the likelihood of a sprain, including:

  • Previous ankle injuries
  • Poor balance
  • Unsupportive footwear

Sports that involve jumping or rapid changes in direction, such as basketball or soccer, also elevate the risk of injury.

What Are the Signs?

The signs of an ankle sprain can vary, based on the severity of the injury and which ligaments are affected. Some individuals notice symptoms immediately, and others may observe changes over the following hours. Pain or tenderness is a common sign, particularly when the injured ankle bears weight. Swelling around the joint and bruising or discoloration of the skin may also develop. Some individuals notice a limited range of motion or a feeling of instability in the joint. Others recall a popping sensation at the time of injury.

These signs can resemble those of other injuries, including fractures and tendon damage. A professional evaluation may help clarify the nature of the injury. During an examination, a foot and ankle specialist is able to assess the ankle’s movement and stability, and they can order imaging tests such as X-rays when needed.

How Are They Treated?

Treatment for an ankle sprain depends on certain aspects of one’s case, such as the severity of the injury. Many mild to moderate sprains are managed with nonsurgical approaches, and a specialist may recommend one or more of these methods for an individual. These can include:

  • Rest and activity modification to reduce stress on the ligaments
  • Ice applied in short intervals to help manage swelling
  • Compression with an elastic bandage or wrap
  • Elevation of the ankle above heart level
  • Exercise guidance to restore strength, flexibility, and balance

Sprains do not respond to conservative care in some cases. Individuals who experience repeated sprains can develop chronic ankle instability; this is a condition in which the ankle frequently gives way. When symptoms persist despite nonsurgical treatment, a surgeon may discuss procedures to repair or reconstruct the damaged ligaments.

Seek Foot and Ankle Care

Prompt evaluation by a foot and ankle specialist can help identify the extent of the injury and rule out related conditions, such as fractures or cartilage damage. Individuals who are unable to bear weight, notice significant swelling, or have symptoms that do not improve within several days may benefit from a professional assessment. Preventive measures can also help lower the risk of future sprains; wearing supportive footwear suited to each activity, warming up before exercise, and performing strengthening exercises all support ankle stability. A foot and ankle specialist may provide guidance on prevention strategies that align with individual needs and activity levels.
