Enhancing Your Smile With Lip Fillers

Lip fillers add shape and fullness through small, measured injections, and minor adjustments can shift your overall facial balance. Some med spa guests choose them before special events, and others want a subtle change to their everyday look. Here is more information on the product, the process, and what to expect:

Using Hyaluronic Acid

Many lip fillers use hyaluronic acid, which is a natural substance your body already makes. It attracts and holds water in the skin. The gel gives the lips a soft feel, and it blends into the surrounding tissue.

There are multiple brands and formulas, and each one has a different thickness. Your provider picks a formula after they review your lip shape and goals. When needed, thinner gels suit fine lines around the mouth. Thicker gels add more structure to the body of the lip.

Hyaluronic acid fillers are temporary. In many cases, results last from a few months to a couple of years. An enzyme dissolves the filler, so you have a way to reverse the results.

Injecting Into the Lips

Before the injections begin, your provider cleans the area and applies a numbing cream. Many fillers also contain lidocaine, and this numbing agent reduces discomfort during treatment. The full appointment usually takes 30 to 60 minutes. Ice packs may also help numb the lips.

Your provider uses a fine needle or a thin, blunt tube called a cannula, and they inject small amounts at a time. They gently massage the lips to shape the gel. If you want to prepare for your appointment, follow these steps:

  • Pause aspirin, ibuprofen, and fish oil for about a week
  • Skip alcohol before the procedure.
  • Tell your provider about past cold sores or allergies.
  • Book your visit at least two weeks before a major event.

Adding Volume

Since lips often thin over time, many people use filler to replace some volume. Others simply want a fuller shape. Providers measure filler in milliliters, and a typical first session uses a small amount. Smaller amounts produce a subtler change.

Swelling is normal for the first few days. Your lips may look larger at first, but they settle shortly. Many providers schedule a follow-up visit after the swelling fades. Avoid hard workouts for 24 hours, and stay out of saunas and hot tubs.

Creating Symmetry

Few people have perfectly even lips, and one side often looks fuller than the other. Your provider studies your lips at rest and while you smile. Small, targeted injections address uneven areas. Bring reference photos to your consultation, but expect your provider to adapt them to your features. Providers typically focus on the following areas, and each one affects your smile differently:

  • Cupid’s bow: the curved center of the upper lip
  • Vermilion border: the edge where the lip meets the skin
  • Lip corners: the outer edges that may turn downward
  • Lip body: the main area that holds volume

Lip fillers carry some minor risks, and bruising, swelling, and tenderness are the most common. A licensed nurse injector, physician assistant, or physician should perform your treatment. When you compare clinics, ask to see before-and-after photos and read client reviews. Schedule a consultation with our team to discuss your goals, costs, and options.
