When To Get Dental Implants

Tooth loss can result from injury, decay, gum disease, or other dental conditions. When teeth are missing, the resulting gaps may affect how a person chews or speaks. Dentists offer several methods of tooth replacement, and dental implants are a common option. Unlike removable appliances that rest on the gums, implants are anchored within the jawbone.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are small posts, usually made of titanium, that a dentist or oral surgeon places into the jawbone. The post acts as a synthetic root, and it takes the place of the natural root that once held a tooth in position. Titanium is used because it is biocompatible, meaning it does not chemically react with bone. The surrounding bone can fuse with the surface of the post over time, forming a stable base. Implants may support several types of restorations:

  • Crowns: One implant can hold an artificial tooth that replaces an individual missing tooth.
  • Bridges: Multiple implants may anchor a bridge that spans a row of missing teeth.
  • Dentures: Implants can secure full or partial dentures so they stay in place without relying on adhesives alone.

A connector called an abutment links the post to the restoration above the gumline.

Who Are They For?

Dental implants may be an option for adults missing one tooth or several teeth. People who wear traditional dentures can also explore implant-supported alternatives for a more stable fit. A dentist evaluates several factors before recommending this approach. One primary factor is the condition of the jawbone. The post sits directly in the bone, so there must be enough bone volume and density to hold it. When a tooth has been missing for an extended period, the bone in that area can diminish.

If the jaw is not large or strong enough to support an implant, a dentist may recommend a bone graft. This procedure adds bone or bone-like material to build up the site. The graft may be placed during the same visit as the implant, or it is treated as a separate preliminary step. A dentist can also review gum health, oral hygiene habits, tobacco use, and general health history to determine whether implants or another replacement method is more suitable.

What Does the Process Involve?

Receiving a dental implant typically takes place over multiple visits, sometimes months apart. Timelines vary, but treatment generally follows the same stages. These involve:

  1. Post Placement: At the first appointment, the dentist places the titanium post into the jawbone. If a bone graft is needed, it may be completed at this time.
  2. Healing and Fusion: A healing period of several weeks or longer follows. During this time, the bone gradually bonds with the post.
  3. Abutment and Impression: At the second visit, the dentist attaches the abutment to the post and takes an impression of the area. This impression serves as a mold for the custom crown, bridge, or denture.
  4. Restoration: At the last visit, the dentist fits and secures the finished restoration. Minor adjustments may be made so it fits comfortably alongside the neighboring teeth.

Your dentist can outline the expected timeline for your situation, including any added steps.

Confer With Your Dentist

Dental implants are intended for long-term use, and they may last for many years with proper care. The surrounding gum tissue and bone still require attention, since these areas can become inflamed or infected if plaque accumulates. Your dentist can recommend cleaning techniques suited to your restoration type and help you determine whether dental implants align with your oral health goals.
