What Patients Should Know About Hip Arthroscopy Recovery

Hip arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure, and it is performed to treat problems inside your hip joint. A surgeon uses a small camera and thin tools to reach the joint. Since the incisions stay small, many patients recover faster than they would after open surgery. This is what you should know about recovery from these procedures:

Healing From Small Incisions

The incisions from hip arthroscopy are typically very short. Small openings tend to close faster, and they often leave minimal scarring. When you keep the area clean and dry, the tissue heals steadily over the first two weeks. Follow your surgeon’s instructions about bandage changes and bathing.

Watch your incision sites each day for signs of trouble. Call your surgical team if you notice any of these symptoms:

  • Noticing redness or warmth
  • Smelling fluid or drainage
  • Having a high fever

Report these changes early, and your care team will guide your next steps. Since infections progress quickly, prompt attention protects your healing joint. Keep the contact number for your surgeon within easy reach.

Completing Physical Therapy

Physical therapy starts within days of your surgery. Your therapist assigns gentle exercises, and these movements rebuild strength around the hip. Since the joint needs support, you focus on controlled motion before adding resistance. Attend every session your surgeon prescribes. Progress happens in stages, and each stage builds on the one before it.

Controlling Swelling and Pain

Swelling is common after hip arthroscopy. Ice reduces inflammation, and elevation helps fluid drain away from the joint. When you rest with your leg propped up, the swelling tends to settle faster. Use a barrier between the ice pack and your skin.

Your surgeon prescribes medication to manage discomfort during early recovery. Take these doses as directed, and never exceed the recommended amount. Since pain patterns shift over time, tell your team if the discomfort worsens. Keep a simple log of your pain levels each day.

A few daily habits make swelling easier to control:

  • Apply ice for 15 to 20 minutes at a time
  • Prop your leg above heart level when resting
  • Move gently through your prescribed exercises

Adjusting Activities

You need to modify your daily routine for several weeks. Crutches support your weight, and they reduce stress on the healing joint. When your surgeon clears you, you slowly return to walking without assistance. Avoid twisting or pivoting on the operated hip.

Return to work depends on your job demands. Desk work often resumes sooner, and physical labor usually requires more recovery time. As every patient heals at a different pace, follow the timeline your surgeon sets. Ask before you restart driving, sports, or heavy lifting.

Plan your home setup before your surgery date. Keep frequently used items within reach, and remove loose rugs that create tripping hazards. When your space is ready, daily tasks feel more manageable during recovery.

Schedule a Hip Arthroscopy Follow-up

Follow-up visits track how your joint heals over time; your surgeon checks your incisions, and they review your therapy progress at each appointment. Since these visits catch problems early, keep every scheduled date on your calendar.  Attend your therapy, monitor your incisions, and follow your activity limits. Contact an office today to schedule your hip arthroscopy follow-up appointment.
